Cut Water Pollution in the Great Barrier Reef NOW!

Tell the Australian and Queensland governments to get serious about reducing Reef water pollution.

Thousands of marine species, including threatened dugongs and turtles, rely on clean water and healthy coral reefs and seagrass meadows to survive and reproduce.

However, water pollution from farming and tree clearing continues to run from the land into waterways leading to the Great Barrier Reef.

The main pollutants, sediments, nutrients and pesticides reduce the growth, reproduction, and survival of corals and seagrasses and lower their ability to cope with heat waves, storms and floods, which are exacerbated by climate change.

Water pollution is a preventable problem and entirely in Australia’s hands.
Our governments need to stop the uncontrolled tree clearing now, especially near rivers and streams and drive sustainable farming in Reef catchments. But to substantially cut water pollution, we need to restore our wetlands – the Reef’s natural water filters.

Clean water means thriving coral reefs and seagrass meadows—vital habitats for dugongs and turtles— Cutting water pollution enhances their resilience to climate change safeguarding our Reef for generations to come.

We call on our governments to cut water pollution entering the Reef now.
